The suspension bridge sways, and beneath you the Storms River pushes its dark water into the sea. The mouth sits in the Tsitsikamma section of the Garden Route National Park, already in the Eastern Cape, with a forest walk out to the bridge and the start of the Otter Trail, which takes five days to Nature’s Valley. Around 215 kilometres separate Mossel Bay from the Storms River mouth, and in between, near Plettenberg Bay, sits the only toll plaza on the Garden Route, at the Bloukrans bridge.

The Bloukrans bridge is the second reason to drive out here, or the only one, depending on your nerves. People jump on a rubber cord into the gorge 216 metres above the river; Face Adrenalin runs the bungee and calls the bridge the highest in Africa, and it also offers a guided bridge walk for anyone who only wants to look. If you want both, bridge and river mouth, stay the night in Storms River Village or in the park and drive on the next day towards Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) or back west.
